BIK credit history: how to build it when you are new in Poland
No credit history is not the same as a bad one – but a short, positive history makes banks more confident. Here's how to build it.

BIK (Biuro Informacji Kredytowej) is the Polish credit bureau. Banks check it with every application.
"No history" vs "bad history"
- No history: common for newcomers. Not a reason for refusal, but the bank has less information about you.
- Bad history: late payments of 30+ days are a serious problem and stay visible for a long time.
How to build a positive history
- Open a credit card or a small installment purchase and repay it on time.
- Use a small part of the limit and pay the full amount every month.
- Keep it for 6–12 months before applying for a mortgage.
Watch out for
- Too many applications in a short time – each one is visible to banks.
- High unused limits – they reduce your creditworthiness.
- Paying in installments "0%" in shops – these are loans too.
Check your report
You can download your BIK report online. It is worth checking before applying – mistakes happen and can be corrected.
A clean, short history plus stable income is a good starting point. The calculator will show your options – and an advisor can tell you whether it is worth waiting a few months.
